Three outdoor mineral pools fed by the town's thermal springs: a 50-metre cooler pool for swimming; a 33-metre hot mineral pool; and a shallow very hot sitting pool. Velingrad's springs range from 25 to 97 degrees Celsius. Café and showers on site. Entry approximately 5 BGN adults and 2.50 BGN children.
The complex operates seasonally as an outdoor facility. Hours are 08:00-18:00. Central Mineral Beach is at ul. Hr. Smirnenski 29 in Velingrad's municipal park, close to the town centre and walkable from most accommodation in central Velingrad. Velingrad is approximately 75 kilometres southwest of Plovdiv. From Plovdiv, drive west on the road through Pazardzhik toward Velingrad; approximately 1.5 hours by car. The park is free to enter; the mineral pools are the ticketed section.
The complex is seasonal and outdoor; it operates in warmer months and closes during winter. Confirm current opening dates and hours before visiting as these vary by season and year. The complex is busy on summer weekends when domestic tourists fill Velingrad's hotels.
Suitability & Accessibility
Who Central Mineral Beach Velingrad Suits
Central Mineral Beach Velingrad suits budget-conscious visitors who want a genuine public mineral pool experience without the cost of a spa hotel, families with children who appreciate the variety of pool temperatures and the open park setting, and visitors already staying in Velingrad who want a low-cost outdoor soak to complement a hotel spa package. The very low admission price makes it one of the most accessible mineral bathing options in Bulgaria. The rustic character of the 1937 facility is part of its appeal for those who prefer an authentic local experience over a polished resort.
Velingrad itself offers extensive further mineral water options. The town has over 80 springs feeding multiple hotel spas, public baths, and mineral pool complexes for all budgets. The Rhodope Mountains surrounding Velingrad offer hiking trails, waterfalls, and the narrow-gauge Rhodope railway journey. The mountain altitude of 780-800 metres gives the town clean air and a cooler climate compared to the plains below, making it a pleasant summer destination even in hot Bulgarian summers. For visitors looking for hot springs near Plovdiv Bulgaria, Velingrad is the primary thermal destination in the region.
Wheelchair access at Central Mineral Beach Velingrad has not been confirmed. The outdoor pool complex is in a public park with older infrastructure; visitors with mobility requirements should contact the Velingrad municipality before visiting to confirm current access to the pool surrounds and changing facilities.
Safety & Etiquette
Central Mineral Beach Velingrad Safety Tips
Central Mineral Beach Velingrad has three pools at notably different temperatures; the contrast between them can be intense. The shallow hot sitting pool is the most extreme of the three and is designed for short soaking sessions rather than prolonged bathing. Test the temperature of each pool before entering fully. Transition from the cold swimming pool to the hot pools gradually rather than entering the hottest pool directly from exertion. People with cardiovascular conditions or pregnancy should seek medical advice before using the hot pools. The 50-metre cold pool is genuinely cool relative to standard outdoor pools; warm up before extended swimming to avoid cramp.
The complex is a well-used public facility rather than a managed spa. Lifeguard coverage should not be assumed; supervise children closely at all times, particularly near the deep 50-metre pool and the very hot shallow pool. Some visitor reviews note that water temperatures are not mixed or adjusted: the hot pool can be uncomfortably hot and the cold pool quite cold. Moving between pools deliberately is the recommended approach. Shower before entering the pools and observe standard public pool hygiene.
The complex is seasonal and operates outdoors; afternoon sun on the pool surrounds can make surfaces very hot in summer. Wear grip sandals and bring sun protection. The municipal park setting means the site can become busy on summer weekends and Bulgarian public holidays; arriving in the morning gives the best experience. Cash in Bulgarian lev is recommended for entry and the on-site café. Check seasonal opening dates before travelling specifically to visit the mineral beach, as it does not operate year-round.
