Nevada has 18 hot springs, including 10 free primitive soaks and 8 paid resorts, the highest number of primitive, undeveloped desert hot springs of any US state, thanks to its position at the heart of the Basin & Range Province, where extensional faulting creates ideal geothermal plumbing. Nevada is the only state where you can drive a single interstate corridor and find dozens of free wild soaks in a single weekend, most on BLM public land, most under a wide-open desert sky. Springs cluster in four regions: the Black Rock Desert and northwestern Nevada (Trego, Soldier Meadows, Bog, Gerlach), the central corridor along Highway 50 (Spencer, Diana's Punchbowl, Alkali, Hyder), the southern desert near Las Vegas (Gold Strike, Arizona/Ringbolt, Rogers, Ash Springs), and the eastern Great Basin (Baker, Twelvemile). Flagship sites include Spencer Hot Springs, Diana's Punchbowl, Soldier Meadows, and Ash Springs. Nevada's thermal activity is driven by Basin & Range crustal extension - the state hosts more than 300 geothermal areas by some counts. Surface temperatures range widely from 90°F to scalding 180°F+ at unimproved sources, always test before entering. Land ownership is overwhelmingly BLM. Access is a mix of paved-road drive-up and rough dirt roads that require high clearance or 4WD. Best season is October through April while summer is dangerously hot.
