Wyoming has 15 hot springs, including 3 free primitive soaks and 12 paid resorts, home to Big Spring in Thermopolis, the largest single mineral hot spring in the world (discharging 8,000 gallons per minute at 127°F) and to the free Boiling River soak inside Yellowstone National Park (status varies, check current NPS closures). Wyoming is the only state that holds a treaty-guaranteed free public bath house at its largest hot spring: the 1896 Shoshone-Arapaho land cession includes a permanent public bathing right at Thermopolis, so the State Bath House remains free to visit today. Springs cluster in three regions: Thermopolis (State Bath House, Star Plunge, Hot Springs State Park), Yellowstone's boundary (Boiling River, check status, plus Old Faithful area is look-only), and the Wind River / Snake River corridor (Granite, Astoria, Saratoga's Hobo Pool). Flagship sites include the Wyoming State Bath House at Thermopolis, Granite Hot Springs, Astoria, and Hobo Pool at Saratoga. Wyoming's thermal activity is driven by the Yellowstone hotspot and Absaroka volcanic remnants while Thermopolis water rises along the Owl Creek Mountain fault. Surface temperatures range 95-135°F at soakable sites (Yellowstone geyser basins are look-only). Land ownership is a mix of state park (Thermopolis, Hobo Pool), National Forest (Granite, Astoria), and NPS (Boiling River). Access is largely drive-up. Best season is year-round and winter soaking with steam plumes is iconic. Gateway airports are Jackson (JAC), Cody (COD), and Casper (CPR). Swimwear is required at all sites.
