South Dakota has one significant naturally warm spring destination, the town of Hot Springs in the southern Black Hills, anchored by Evans Plunge, the oldest continuously operating natural warm water indoor pool in the country (open since 1890) and fed by a warm mineral spring at approximately 87°F. South Dakota is the only Great Plains state with a genuine geothermal-adjacent soaking destination, produced by the Black Hills uplift's fault-driven artesian discharge. Warm springs in the area cluster around Fall River and Hot Brook Canyon; the historic Cascade Falls and Cascade Springs Natural Area feature warm-water pools open for wading. Flagship sites: Evans Plunge, Cascade Springs, and the historic Springs Bath House (Fall River County Museum). The Black Hills' thermal water is meteoric groundwater rising along steep artesian gradients in Madison Limestone. Surface temperatures at Evans Plunge are ~87°F year-round. Land ownership is mixed: private (Evans Plunge), state (Cascade Springs), and federal (Custer State Park nearby). Access is drive-up.
