Safety & Etiquette
Sand Dunes Pool Safety Tips
Sand Dunes Pool requires attention around the therapy tub, which runs at approximately 108 to 109 degrees Fahrenheit, above the 104-degree threshold associated with elevated heat risk. Limit time in the therapy tub, alternate with the cooler main pool, and enter cautiously. People with cardiovascular conditions, high or low blood pressure, or pregnancy should consult a physician before using the therapy tub or the hotter pools in the Greenhouse. This applies equally to the warmer Greenhouse pools.
The outdoor pool facility sits at approximately 7,500 feet elevation. Visitors from lower elevations may notice altitude effects. Soaking in warm water at altitude accelerates dehydration; drink water throughout your visit. Summer sun at this elevation is strong; apply sunscreen before extended outdoor time. The outdoor pool is an exposed setting, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. At the first sign of lightning, clear the water and seek shelter.
The San Luis Valley is subject to rapid weather changes. Wind can be strong across the valley in all seasons and temperatures drop quickly after sunset; bring a warm layer for after-soak time. In winter, roads across the valley can be icy and blowing snow can reduce visibility, so check conditions before driving long distances.
Pets at the pool facility require a leash and a signed waiver at entry; guests are responsible for their pets at all times. The Greenhouse is strictly for guests aged 21 and over, and ID may be checked at entry. Glass containers are not permitted at the pool. The nearest medical services are in Alamosa, approximately 20 miles south.
