About Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa, Hungary
Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa, Hungary is at Termal korut 2/A in Buk, Vas County, western Hungary, approximately 30 kilometres from Szombathely and halfway between Vienna and Lake Balaton. It is described as Hungary's second largest thermal complex, covering 14 hectares with 32 to 34 pools. Thermal water was discovered in 1957 during oil drilling at 58 degrees Celsius; the first spa opened in 1962 and the facility was certified as a year-round thermal spa in 1972. The water is an alkaline hydrogen carbonate composition with a mineral content exceeding 15,000 milligrams per litre, among the strongest medicinal waters in Central Europe.
Medicinal pools run at 32 to 38 degrees Celsius and are unfiltered and unchlorinated. Indicated conditions include joint and locomotor disease, arthritis, rheumatism, degenerative spine disease, post-surgical rehabilitation, circulatory disorders, and osteoporosis. Bukfurdo runs a dedicated osteoporosis programme described as unique in Hungary. The adventure area includes water slides, wave pools, and a children's section. Sauna World is a textile-free circuit with Finnish saunas, steam cabins, a tepidarium, an ice room, and infusion sessions. NEAK-covered treatments are available. One of the most therapeutically significant hot springs in Hungary in the Western Transdanubia region.

Suitability & Accessibility
Suitability at Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa
Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa suits therapeutic visitors with joint, locomotor, or osteoporosis conditions, families with children, and sauna enthusiasts, as the combination of Hungary's most mineral-concentrated medicinal water in unfiltered pools, a dedicated osteoporosis programme unique in Hungary, a full adventure area, and a textile-free Sauna World circuit makes it one of the most therapeutically and recreationally complete hot springs in Hungary in the Western Transdanubia region.
Families are served by the adventure pools, water slides, and a dedicated children's area with shallower pools and play structures. Children under 14 are not permitted in the thermal or medicinal pools by Hungarian law; the children's area uses heated but non-thermal water. The complex has approximately 1,000 parking spaces with disabled-designated areas, and disabled access is confirmed.
For therapeutic visitors, the NEAK-covered treatment programme covers balneological treatments under medical supervision, and the osteoporosis programme requires advance booking. The medicinal pools are unfiltered and unchlorinated, meaning the full mineral concentration reaches the skin directly. Visitors seeking termalfurdo hungary outside Budapest with stronger medicinal water than city baths will find Bukfurdo's mineral concentrations notably higher than most Budapest options. The Thermal Camping site on the same complex offers camping with direct free spa access year-round, making extended stays for treatment courses practical and affordable.
Safety & Etiquette
Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa Safety Tips
Bukfurdo Thermal and Spa is a large, staffed complex open year-round with a permanent medical presence, but its exceptionally high mineral concentration in the medicinal pools and the textile-free Sauna World require specific awareness from first-time visitors.
The medicinal pools at 32 to 38 degrees Celsius are unfiltered and unchlorinated; the strong mineral smell is a characteristic of the water's therapeutic concentration. Limit initial sessions in the medicinal pools to around 15 to 20 minutes, rest between pools, and drink water regularly. Standard gyogyfurdo contra-indications apply; visitors with cardiovascular conditions or during pregnancy should consult a doctor before using the medicinal pools. Children under 14 are prohibited from the thermal and medicinal pools by Hungarian law; they must use the children's area only.
Sauna World is a textile-free zone. Swimsuits are not permitted inside; towels are mandatory. Visitors who are uncomfortable with European nudist sauna culture should skip this section. The temperature range from the Finnish sauna at 85 to 90 degrees Celsius through to the ice room is intense and should be approached gradually. First-time sauna visitors should start with the tepidarium at 38 degrees before progressing to higher heat. The infusion ceremony sessions are led by trained staff and involve more pronounced temperature fluctuations. Rubber-soled bath footwear is recommended throughout the complex, especially around the pools and in the sauna transition areas. The free parking area accommodates approximately 1,000 vehicles with EV charging. Checking the official website for current opening hours before visiting is advisable as hours vary by section and season.
