About Tamina Therme
Tamina Therme, Switzerland is a public thermal spa in Bad Ragaz, Canton St. Gallen, one hour from Zurich, part of Grand Resort Bad Ragaz. The Tamina spring was discovered in the Tamina Gorge in 1242; it is described as Europe's most abundant thermal source. The first indoor thermal spa in Europe was built here in 1872. The current Tamina Therme was completely rebuilt in 2009 and covers 7,300 square metres with 8 pools at temperatures between 17 and 39 degrees.

A Family Spa area provides separate bathing fun for children. Water temperatures span from 17 to 39 degrees across all pools.
The sauna world covers 1,900 square metres with 7 saunas in Nordic kelo houses (16+): Pirts Latvian ritual sauna, Nero sauna, infusion ceremonies, steam room, cooling pool, natural pond, bistro, and relaxation rooms. Treatments include massage, haki, shiatsu, pedicure, and BABOR facials. Victor Hugo and Thomas Mann are among the historic visitors to the Bad Ragaz spring.

Suitability & Accessibility
Who Tamina Therme Suits
Tamina Therme suits couples and adults seeking an architecturally distinctive thermal spa experience close to Zurich, sauna enthusiasts who want the Nordic kelo sauna world and Latvian Pirts ritual, families using the dedicated Family Spa zone, and visitors to the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz who want the full thermal experience. The white architecture with large glass windows creating a light-flooded interior, and the connection to eight centuries of bathing history, give it a character different from purpose-built aquaparks.
Bad Ragaz is accessible in under an hour from Zurich by direct train, making it one of the most practical day-trip thermal spas from the largest Swiss city. The Thermalbad experience at this level of scale and quality is unusual this close to a major urban centre. The nearby Tamina Gorge, the source of the spring, can be visited on foot; the gorge's dramatic narrow rock canyon was historically the site where patients were lowered by rope to reach the spring directly. Bad Ragaz Casino and the Heidiland region are also nearby.
Tamina Therme is part of Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, a luxury 5-star resort confirmed as wheelchair accessible. Visitors with specific mobility requirements should contact taminatherme.ch before visiting to confirm current step-free routes to the pool areas and facilities.
Safety & Etiquette
Tamina Therme Safety Tips
Tamina Therme is a professionally managed facility with lifeguards on duty during all opening hours. The thermal water varies from 17 to 39 degrees Celsius across the different pools; start in the cooler pools and work up progressively. The 36.5-degree hot bubble bath is the warmest pool; limit continuous sessions to 20-30 minutes and cool down in the current channel or outdoor pool between rounds. People with cardiovascular conditions or pregnancy should seek medical advice before extended bathing. Book online in advance to avoid waiting.
The sauna world requires guests to be 16 or over and uses mixed- gender saunas. The Latvian Pirts ritual involves vigorous steam and birch branch treatment; first-time visitors should inform staff if they are unfamiliar with the ritual. The Nero sauna and infusion ceremonies follow standard sauna practice: shower before entry, limit sessions to 10-15 minutes, and cool down fully at the cooling pool between rounds. The natural pond outside the sauna world is for cooling, not swimming. Access is from age 3; the Family Spa is designed for children with parents present at all times.
Book wellness treatments at taminatherme.ch in advance, particularly for weekends and during school holidays. The facility undergoes annual revision closures; check current closure dates before planning a visit. The Tamina Gorge nearby requires standard outdoor footwear; do not attempt to access the gorge in pool sandals. The Bad Ragaz train service from Zurich is the most reliable transport option; confirm the return train timetable before your visit if relying on public transport.
