Quick FactsOverview
About Giardini Poseidon Terme
Giardini Poseidon Terme, Italy, is the largest thermal park on the island of Ischia, occupying six hectares of terraced gardens on the western coast of the island at Citara Bay in Forio. The park has been in operation since 1959 and is one of the oldest thermal destinations on Ischia. It features over twenty pools filled by the island's volcanic hydrothermal springs at temperatures ranging from 28 to 40 degrees Celsius, three seawater pools, a private 500-metre beach, a natural steam grotto carved from local tuff in the Greco-Roman tradition, a Kneipp circuit with alternating hot and cold pools, a Japanese stone soaking path, and a 500-square-metre wellness centre. The water is classified as hyperthermal and strongly mineralised.
The gardens are carefully maintained and planted with Mediterranean flora; the terraced grounds overlook Citara Bay and the Tyrrhenian Sea. The park's scale means that different areas offer different experiences, from the quiet upper terraces to the busier beach level. A restaurant in a natural tuff grotto, a poolside bar, and a boutique round out the facilities. Giardini Poseidon is a seasonal park, open from mid-April to the end of October, and is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility through ramps, lifts, and an internal electric-car transfer service.
Location & Access
Getting to Giardini Poseidon Terme
Giardini Poseidon Terme is at Via Giovanni Mazzella, Baia di Citara, 80075 Forio d'Ischia, Naples. To reach Ischia from the mainland, ferries (approximately 60 to 80 minutes) and hydrofoils (approximately 30 minutes) depart from Naples, primarily from Molo Beverello and Porta di Massa for ferries and Molo Beverello for hydrofoils. The main island ports are Ischia Porto and Casamicciola Terme. From Ischia Porto, Giardini Poseidon is approximately 15 km by road, about 30 to 40 minutes by car or bus.
Bus line 2 from Ischia Porto runs to Forio and stops approximately 100 metres from the park entrance; this is the easiest and most affordable public transport option. By car or scooter, follow signs for Forio and then for Baia di Citara; on-site guarded parking costs 5 euros per day for cars and 3 euros for scooters. Taxis from Ischia Porto cost approximately 30 euros. The park is open daily from approximately 09:00 to 19:00, mid-April to end of October. Entry fees vary by season: low season full day is approximately 38 to 41 euros, high season 40 to 45 euros, and August up to 48 euros. Afternoon tickets from 13:00 are cheaper. Suitability & Accessibility
Who Giardini Poseidon Terme Suits
Giardini Poseidon Terme suits visitors to Ischia who want a full-day thermal experience combining pools, beach, and gardens in one location. The park's six hectares and twenty-plus pools make it easy to spend a full day moving between different temperature pools, the beach, the steam grotto, and the restaurant. It is the largest and most established thermal park on the island and works well for visitors who want a comprehensive terme experience with all facilities on site, from massages and physiotherapy to beachside loungers.
Families are welcome; the three seawater pools and supervised beach are available to children of all ages. Children under 11 to 12 are not permitted in the thermal pools but have dedicated seawater pool access. The relatively flat layout of the park, with ramps and lifts available, makes Giardini Poseidon one of the better choices among Ischia's thermal parks for visitors with mobility constraints. Several areas are accessible, and the internal electric-car service can transport guests with reduced mobility between sections.
Visitors should note that a bathing cap is mandatory in all thermal pools and must be worn at all times in the pool area. Towels are not included in the entry fee and must be brought or rented on site. The 5-euro wristband deposit is cash only. Those seeking a quieter experience should visit on weekdays, particularly in September and October when the weather remains pleasant but crowds thin out considerably compared to August.
Safety & Etiquette
Giardini Poseidon Terme Safety Tips
Giardini Poseidon Terme is generally safe as a long-established commercial spa park with trained staff present during all operating hours. The main safety considerations are the heat of the upper pools, pool hygiene regulations, the restriction on children in thermal areas, and the health contraindications for certain conditions. The park maintains the pools to a high standard and renews the water constantly given the abundance of the thermal spring flow.
Pool temperatures range from 28 to 40 degrees Celsius. Limit sessions in the hotter pools to 15 to 20 minutes, take breaks between soaks, and drink water regularly. The Kneipp circuit, which alternates between 40-degree hot pools and 15-degree cold pools, places demand on the cardiovascular system; people with heart conditions or blood pressure issues should skip it or consult a doctor first. People with transmissible skin diseases or open wounds are not permitted to use the pools; this is a condition of entry. Pregnant visitors should consult a doctor before using thermal pools. Medical treatment or certified thermal therapy at the wellness centre requires a prior medical consultation.
A bathing cap is mandatory in all thermal pool areas; caps are available to purchase at the entrance or on site. The wristband deposit of 5 euros is cash only and is returned on exit. On-site locker rooms and changing facilities are available with entry. In August the park reaches very high visitor numbers; arriving at opening or booking a reserved sunbed in advance is recommended. The beach and seawater pools are supervised, but thermal pool areas do not have lifeguard coverage equivalent to a public pool. Children under 11 to 12 must be accompanied by adults and are confined to seawater and beach areas at all times.
